Spotlight on Real Sociedad: The Txuri-Urdin await the Blaugrana at the Anoeta

FOOTBALL

Real Sociedad have lost seven league games this season, one of which was against FC Barcelona at the Camp Nou (5-1)

HISTORY

Real Sociedad’s first league title was won in the 1980/81 season, 71 years after the club was founded (1909). The Txuri-Urdin (white and blues) went on to clinch the title again the following season. At the end of the 1980s, Real Sociedad finished second in La Liga and the Copa del Rey (1987), and went on to win the Cup the following year.

FORM GUIDE

Real Sociedad are ninth in the table on 25 point - just five points adrift of a Europa League spot. Of their last five matches they’ve won one (2-1 over Sevilla), tied three (1-1 with Deportivo and Getafe, 0-0 with Granada), and lost one (4-3 to Real Madrid). Their record at Anoeta stands at five victories, three draws and two defeats. The two teams to best Real Sociedad were Atlético Madrid and Espanyol, both games ended 0-1.

ONES TO WATCH

Real Sociedad are a team that blend experience with youth. 29-year-old Xabi Prieto runs the midfield, in tandem with Illarramendi and Prado, and often acts as the ‘mediapunta‘ behind the likes of Castro or Agirretxe. Prieto has given out three assists so far this season, and he’s scored four times. Iñigo Martínez, a 21-year-old centre back, is swiftly becoming a reference point in the back line for the Txuri-Urdin.  He made his debut for the senior side in 2011, and ever since then he’s attracted the attention of clubs from the Premier League and La Liga.
