The Chicago Bears have looked north of the border for their next head coach.

On Wednesday morning the team announced the hiring of Marc Trestman to replace Lovie Smith, who was fired on Dec. 31.

Trestman, 57, has spent the past five seasons as head coach of the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League, where he's posted a 64-34 record and won back-to-back Grey Cup championships.

Trestman's arrival to the Bears marks his return to the NFL after an eight-year absence. From 1985 to 2003, Trestman had stints with nine different teams, including serving as offensive coordinator of Arizona Cardinals (1998 to 2000) and Oakland Raiders (2001-2002), helping to guide the Raiders to Super Bowl XXXVII.

His most recent NFL job was in 2003 with the Miami Dolphins as their quarterbacks/assistant head coach.

Given his history with quarterbacks, it's clear the Bears are hoping Trestman can help grow Jay Cutler. The two have a bit of history as Trestman, as a consultant, helped Cutler prepare for the 2006 NFL Scouting Combine.
