Fact! Mourinho is back at Chelsea! It's signed, sealed, delivered!
It’s been the worst kept secret in football. You can never say things are definite until the pen hits the paper, but it’s been predicted by almost every pundit without exception. Now it appears any last vestige of doubt can be removed.
The Sun is reporting that the sighting of the Portuguese Special One at Wembley was more significant than anyone may have realised. Ostensibly on a visit to friends and the opportunity to take in a game, the other little item on Mourinho’s agenda for the visit to the capital was to sign a contract to return to Stamford Bridge. The newspaper is reporting a “senior Blues source” as confirming that “it’s official – Jose is a Chelsea man again!” For the Blues’ fans, it’s the confirmation that they’ve been awaiting ever since the rumours started to circulate a couple of months ago. Now the deal is done and the special One is back.
Mourinho is scheduled to take charge of his final Real Madrid game at the weekend against Osasuna, before bidding a not-too-fond farewell to the Benabeu. It’s an emotion that will probably be reciprocated by most of the club, and almost all of the first team squad. Like a lot of hurricanes, whenever Mourinho leaves, it tends to be messy. That however, is not something that Chelsea will be thinking too much about at the moment.
With their prodigal son back in the blue embrace, they’ll believe that all things are possible again. It seems likely that a press conference next week will be the vehicle to confirm Mourinho’s return, and that a four-year deal has been agreed. Although the financial package will not be revealed, it’s thought to be in the region of £40million in the unlikely event that it runs its course.
It’s likely that, following a holiday, Mourinho will rock up to at the Bridge on 1st July, and begin his second coming. There’ll be a pre-season games in Asia and America before the Premier league starts again, but you can be sure that the club and it’s returned head honcho will also find time for a bit of transfer market indulgence. Mourinho does certainly like a bit of retail therapy, and talk is that Abramovich has promised him £100million to spend on the squad. Knowing Mourinho’s penchant to spend, there’s not likely to be much other than small change left afterwards. It promises to be an exciting time for the Blues. The man is back!
