West Brom keeper Ben Foster ponders England return

West Brom goalkeeper Ben Foster could be on the verge of an international comeback after a two-year absence from the England squad, Press Association Sport understands.

Foster announced towards the end of the 2010/2011 campaign, when a Birmingham player, that he was no longer available for his country for the foreseeable future because of injury problems.

England head coach Roy Hodgson has recently sounded out Foster about a possible return to the international fold, however, and is believed to have received a positive response. It is understood Foster is in contention to return for next month's World Cup qualifiers in San Marino and Montenegro.

Hodgson, who managed Foster when in charge of the Baggies, had initially tried to persuade the 29-year-old to make himself available for Euro 2012.

The former Manchester United player, who won the last of his five caps three years ago, declined the opportunity but is now understood to be ready to return.

He would provide experienced competition for the current number one, Joe Hart, whose form for Manchester City has been under the spotlight in recent weeks.

Hodgson is short of back-up for Hart, with Norwich's Jon Ruddy injured and Stoke's new signing Jack Butland likely to be required for this summer's European Under-21 Championship.

Foster has again been in outstanding form for Albion in their push for a Europa League spot after signing a new five-year contract in the summer.

He described his performance in the 2-0 win at Liverpool earlier this month, which included a penalty save from England captain Steven Gerrard, as the best of his career.

If he is recalled, Foster will be reunited with goalkeeping coach Dave Watson, who he worked with during his spell at Birmingham.
