Story Highlights
  • New Chiefs head coach Andy Reid made his first major personnel move a bombshell -- acquiring QB Alex Smith
  • Smith was the starter for the San Francisco 49ers in 2012, until he suffered a concussion and lost his job to Colin Kaepernick
  • Kaepernick then took the 49ers to the Super Bowl, where they lost to the Baltimore Ravens

With less than two weeks to go before the start of the 2013 NFL league year, the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers have reached an agreement on a deal to send quarterback Alex Smith to Kansas City, according to a person informed of the impending trade.

The person spoke to USA TODAY Sports on condition of anonymity because the move can't become official until March 12, when the league year begins.

MOCK DRAFT: How many QBs in first round?

The agreement on the deal between the Niners and Chiefs was first reported by FoxSports.com.

The Chiefs were clearly looking for an upgrade over Matt Cassel, who is due $7.5 million in base salary this season and is likely to be released. The team spoke to the Philadelphia Eagles about a possible trade for Nick Foles, whom Andy Reid coached last season, but the Eagles said they are intent on keeping Foles.

BRADY'S NEW DEAL: Will it affect Flacco?

The Chiefs hold the No. 1 pick in April's draft and could use that selection to take Texas A&M offensive tackle Luke Joeckel. They're also hoping to re-sign pending free agent tackle Branden Albert as well as wide receiver Dwayne Bowe.

Those three roster moves would provide Smith with some protection, as well as a big-bodied wide receiver two years removed from a 15-touchdown season.

According to multiple reports, the Chiefs gave up a second-round pick (No. 34 overall) this year as well as additional compensation next year. The Niners now have 15 picks in this year's draft.

Smith, who turns 29 in May, is signed through the 2014 season. It's likely the Chiefs already have worked out an extension.
