Wenger 'wouldn't turn down Rooney'

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has hinted he would be interested in making a move for Wayne Rooney should the striker be sold by Manchester United this summer.

The England forward, who scored in the 2-2 draw against Brazil in the Maracana, has handed in a transfer request and his future remains uncertain following the appointment of David Moyes, his former manager at Everton, as successor to Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford.

Wenger has some £100million to spend as he looks to make the Gunners title contenders once again and admitted a bid would have to be considered should Rooney come on to the market, telling Al Jazeera Sport: "Rooney could be an interesting player for everybody in the world, who would turn him down?"

He continued: "David Moyes' first challenge is to go in to Manchester and bridge the gap between him and Rooney. If that is feasible or not depends on his personality...we will see.

"It will be interesting to see how that will be handled."

Rooney has struggled for form this season and found himself playing second fiddle to Robin van Persie following the Dutchman's arrival from Arsenal last summer.

Ferguson confirmed towards the end of the season that Rooney had asked for a transfer, which was rejected, with the striker left out of the squad for the penultimate Barclays Premier League fixture against Swansea as a result.
