Cavani joins Thiago Alcantara on Manchester United's wanted list

Manchester United are preparing a massive bid for Napoli’s Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani. David Moyes has apparently been given the green light by the club owning Glazer family to pursue the striker, currently the hottest property in Europe.

It’s thought that Moyes favours a front two format, and the option of pairing Cavani with Dutch goal machine Robin van Persie would be a mouth-watering prospect for the Old Trafford faithful. The move throws a blanket of doubt over the future of apparently unsettled United striker Wayne Rooney. Talks are understood to be scheduled, and the feeling was that Rooney would stay, but United may be making a statement of intent to their player. ‘No-one is bigger than the club’ appears to be the way that Moyes is setting up the discussions. Doubtless, his no-nonsense predecessor Sir Alex Ferguson would approve of the stance.

It will be interesting to see whether United retain an interest in Cavani should Rooney be brought back into line by Moyes’ hard line approach. Information from Old Trafford suggests that the pursuit of Cavani is not dependent on Rooney moving on, but it would be difficult to fit van Persie, Rooney and the Uruguayan into a regular format, unless Rooney adopts a deeper lying role. It’s thought that with Cavani’s style of play being similar to Rooney’s, pairing them as a front two isn’t really a viable option.

Moyes also remains intent on securing long-time United target Thiago Alcantara. Rumour and counter rumour have swirled around the future of the the young midfielder. Barcelona are said to have offered assurances of more first team opportunities, if he signs a new contract, whilst his father, formar Brazilian international Mazinho, is reported to be considering moving his family to north west England. The smoke and mirrors around this one are quite intense, but when the dust settles, it seems likely that the player will be donning a red shirt.
