Clermont Auvergne will hold a special meeting on Monday to discuss the future of Vern Cotter, who has been chosen as Scotland's new head coach.
He is not due to fully take up his position with Scotland until June 2014.
But that arrangement is now in doubt after Clermont president Rene Fontes told the club website that Cotter had offered his resignation.
This is denied by Cotter , but Monday's meeting will decide if he will complete the last year of his contract.
Publicly at least, he has expressed his desire to have another attempt to winning the Heineken Cup, his side having lost in this season's final.
But the Scottish Rugby Union has received some criticism from within the game and the media for not securing Cotter's services earlier.
The national parent body insists that it was not a case of it failing to agree a compensation fee with the French Top 14 club.
Chief executive Mark Dodson said he was willing to wait until 2014 to secure "the best man for the job".
Until Cotter is released from his Clermont contract, Scott Johnson , who is taking up the role as director of rugby, will continue as interim head coach.
