Sky sources are reporting that Everton and Wigan have agreed a compensation deal which will allow Latics boss Roberto Martinez to take charge at Goodison Park.
And the Spaniard could be confirmed as the new man in charge at Everton within the next 24 hours.
Everton have been seeking a new manager since David Moyes announced that he was going to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.
And the highly-rated Martinez, who led Wigan to a memorable FA Cup final triumph last month but could not save them from relegation to the Championship, has been heavily linked with the Goodison Park vacancy.
He recently informed Wigan chairman Dave Whelan that he had reluctantly decided to part company with the club and held talks with Everton chairman Bill Kenwright last week.
Former Schalke boss Ralf Rangnick and Porto coach Vitor Pereira were also on Everton's short-list but it looks like Martinez is the man who will try to build on Moyes' good work.
Everton released a statement on Monday which read: "While positive moves are being made, the club will officially announce details as and only when they are agreed and completed."
