4:10PM EST November 27. 2012 - PHILADELPHIA -- The housecleaning has begun.
Philadelphia Eagles 2011 sack leader Jason Babin was released Tuesday in the latest warning shot of accountability fired by coach Andy Reid at an underperforming defense.
Babin went from a team-best 18 sacks in 2011 when the Eagles led the league with 50 sacks to a disappointing 5.5 sacks this season. He signed a five-year, $28-million contract prior the 2011 season. In addition to the diminished sack totals, he never showed the ability to stop the run.
"We appreciate everything that Jason has given this team over the last couple of years,'' Reid said in a statement. "We wish him all the best as he continues his career.
"By releasing him today, this gives us an opportunity to give more playing time to some of our younger guys in the defensive line rotation.''
The release of Babin, 32, opens the door for rookie pass rusher Vinny Curry.
After a loss to the Atlanta Falcons, Babin took to Twitter to question the loyalty of some Eagles fans. Babin claimed some of the chants directed toward Reid and the team were "Some of the most vile things I've ever heard."
